Treble Seeking teams up for the 2020 UCL final
The culmination of this season’s Uefa Champions League will come on 23rd, August 2020 at the Est’adio da Luz Stadium in Lisbon, Portugal. It will be the 28th edition of the Uefa Champions League where free scoring Bayern Munich will square it up against French giants Paris Saint Germain.
It is the debut final for PSG who have struggled to replicate their domestic prowess in Europe’s elite competition in recent years. They have not gone beyond the last 16 for the last three seasons despite their Qatar owners spending heavily in pursuit of European glory. German’s Bayern are five time winners, having won the trophy last in 2013. Since then, they have been dominant in Europe, the semi finals on four occasions.
Interestingly, like in the 2010 and 2015 finals, the winner got a treble, finalists triumphed in their respective domestic competitions. It will be the first ever treble for Paris Saint Germain while Bayern will be going for their second treble, having scooped it in 2013.This is a rare fete, achieved previously only by this German side alongside Manchester United in 1998, Inter Milan in 2010 and Barcelona in 2009 and 2015.
It will be an amazing encounter as both teams posses their own strengths and weaknesses in equal measure. Comprised of world class players and dominant in attack, the teams will have to be without some key players. PSG lost their first choice goalkeeper Keylor Navas in the quarter final match against Atlanta while midfielder Marco Verrati is out injured. Bayern Munich’s starters Benjamin Pavard and Gerome Boateng are doubtful ahead of the match.
Prolific Robert Lewandowski and 2014 world cup winner Thomas Muller will lead Bayern’s attacking force. The Polish marksman has been clinical and lethal in front of goal, going on to lead the goal scoring charts with 15 goals.
Lewandowski has cemented his name as one of the best strickers this season, having scored a record 54 goals in all competions. He will hope to win his first champions league trophy having lost narrowly in the 2013 decider while playing for Borussia Dortmund.
Other notable stars for the Bavarians include left back Alphonso Davies, Thiago Alcantara and semi final man of the match Serge Gnabry.
Brazilian Neymar Jr and 2018 world cup winner Kylian Mbappe will lead the attack for the French side. PSG are in dire need of this trophy to cement their name in the list of European footbaling powerhouses.
The Brazilian cannot afford to waste clear chances as he did in previous games while Mbappe’s speed will be crucial in punishing an exposive Bayern back line.
Additionally, leading assist provider Angel di Maria, who is also a great finisher will be instrumental in how this French side will fair in this game.
Could this be PSG’s time for European supremacy? Will Bayern become the second team to win a treble twice, alongside Barcelona? It promises to be indeed a brilliant final. Sunday has just to come very soon.
